Position summary

Applications are invited for the post of a Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher to join the SFI MaREI Centre, ERI in University College Cork (UCC) to work on the planning and environmental aspects of two innovative technology projects.

The EU funded FORWARD2030 project on Fast-tracking Offshore Renewable energy With Advanced Research to Deploy 2030 MW of tidal energy before 2030 has the aim of accelerating the commercial deployment of floating tidal energy. One of the objectives of the project is to enhance environmental and societal acceptance, hence the role of the Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher will be to provide an evidence case to policy makers involved in Maritime Spatial Planning and assist them in planning the rollout of floating tidal stream energy, both in Scotland and the EU. This will necessitate a thorough understanding of the technology in terms of its environmental impacts but also an exploration of if and how this technology might co-exist with other marine uses/users such as shipping and navigation, fisheries etc., and what spatial requirements would work best for multiple users and activities.

The second project, NaturSea-PV, is on novel Eco-Cementitious materials and components for durable, competitive and bio-inspired Offshore Floating Photo- Voltaic (PV) substructures. The strategic objective of NaturSea-PV is to improve the overall lifetime, reliability and maintainability of marine substructures for offshore floating PV, to reduce degradation and failure rates, and thus investment risk and Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE). The UCC contribution will be on the environmental, social and economic considerations. Work to be conducted will scope out the potential planning and regulatory, environmental, and social issues associated with large-scale roll- out of Floating PV installations. Specifically the successful candidate will be responsible for authoring a planning and regulatory assessment report, a scoping document on environmental effects of floating PV, and coordinating participants involved in the social perception and LCOE assessment tasks respectively. In addition the senior post-doctoral researcher, will be expected to contribute to the dissemination and communication of findings from both projects and day-to-day project management.

MaREI is a key research centre within UCC's Environmental Research Institute (ERI), which is an internationally recognised Institute for environmental research dedicated to the understanding and protection of our natural environment and to developing innovative technologies, tools and services to facilitate a transformation to a zero carbon and resource efficient society. The MaREI Centre is an SFI funded research centre headquartered in the ERI and includes 13 other Universities and Third Level Institutes from across Ireland, has 50 industrial partners and has accumulated research funding of approximately 60m. It combines the expertise of a wide range of research groups and industry partners, with the shared mission of solving the main scientific, technical and socio-economic challenges across the climate, energy and marine spaces. MaREI is also funded by SEAI, EI, EPA, ERDF, EU, HEA, Marine Institute, DCCAE and IRC, as well as through contributions from our industry partners. Researchers in the MaREI Centre have over 30 years of experience in conducting fundamental and applied research supported by competitively won national and international funding, and commercial contracts with government agencies and industry. MaREI's strengths lie in the multi- disciplinary nature of its research teams, allowing it to combine insights across areas such as MRE Technologies, Materials & Structures, Observations & Operations, Coastal & Marine Systems, Bioenergy, Energy Policy & Modelling and Renewable Energy Management.

Post Duration: 48 months

Salary: 46,906- 51,035 p.a. (IUA PD2 Salary Scale)
