Post-Doctorate In Oral Immunology With A Focus On Tissue Degenerative Processes, 2 Years
Umea University
Description
Umeå University, Faculty of Medicine
Umeå University is one of Sweden's largest institutions of higher education with over 35,000 students and 4,200 faculty and staff. We are characterised by world-leading research in several scientific fields and a multitude of educations ranked highly in international comparison. Umeå University is also the site of the pioneering discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 genetic scissors - a revolution in genetic engineering that has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
At Umeå University, everything is nearby. Our cohesive campus environment makes it easy to meet, collaborate and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture where we rejoice in each other's successes.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.
The Department of Odontology conducts teaching in the dental program, dental hygienist program and dental technician program as well as research in mouth, face and jaws. Today there are approximately 70 employees who work in education, research and administration within the department. Here is an opportunity to apply for a position as a postdoctoral fellow in oral immunology to in detail study the role of the immune system in periodontitis and general mechanisms that control inflammation-driven bone resorption. The employment is limited to two years and is full-time based in Umeå. Access 2022-10-01, or by agreement. The application deadline is October 1st.
Project description Inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) is very common and is caused by bacteria found in connection with the teeth and gums. Due to factors that are not fully understood, only some develop periodontitis, which means that the gingivitis process turns into an extensive destruction of the collagen-rich connective tissue and bone that constitute the attachment of the teeth. Bone loss is not only seen in periodontitis, but also in, for example, peri- implantitis and rheumatoid arthritis. In these diseases, bone loss is considered an irreversible condition that risks impairing the function of teeth, implants and joints. However, the molecular mechanisms behind inflammatory bone loss are not fully mapped. Our hypothesis is that there are common molecules that cause inflammation-driven bone loss in individuals who, due to genetic factors, are more susceptible to disease. The overall aim of the project is to identify markers to detect who is at risk of suffering from inflammatory bone loss, such as periodontitis, before the bone breakdown begins. With our research, we also want to discover new osteoimmunological principles that could be attacked with targeted therapy to slow down or prevent inflammation-driven bone loss.
Job duties In our research group, you are expected to contribute with your own ideas to the research project we are conducting. You must be able to work independently and have documented solid experience in experimental research. Your role will be to plan and carry out experiments under the supervision of the research group leaders, as well as to support more junior researchers, PhD students and students in adjacent projects with overlapping goals and methods. The work includes a lot of challenging laboratory work, but also requires independent work with project design, data analysis, presentation of results at scientific meetings, and writing of publications.
More specifically, you will perform flow cytometric analysis of bone marrow cells as well as different lymphocyte populations in gingival tissue. You will isolate and culture bone and connective tissue cells, work with experiments in a number of cell culture systems, and perform geno- and phenotype characterization with various techniques. Work in periodontitis, peri- implantitis and arthritis animal models may also be relevant.
Competence Eligible to be employed as a postdoctoral fellow is someone who has completed a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree, in the subject of medical/biomedical research (e.g. immunology, biochemistry, molecular biology or biomedicine). This eligibility requirement must be met at the latest at the time when the employment decision is made.
We are looking for a driven and highly motivated employee who has documented experience in molecular biology research, flow cytometry, cell culture and gene expression and protein analyses. The applicant must have good knowledge of English, both spoken and written. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
Meritorious Since employment as a postdoctoral fellow is a merit-based position for junior researchers, we primarily target those who have a doctoral degree that is no older than three years from the last date of application. If there are special reasons, it can be considered as having completed a doctoral degree earlier. With special reasons is meant leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical duty, trust assignments in trade unions or other similar circumstances, as well as duty/assignment relevant to the subject area.
Documented experience in cultivating macrophages/monocytes/osteoclasts but also stromal cells such as fibroblasts and osteoblasts is meritorious for the position. Previous experience of postdoctoral work is meritorious for the position. Documented experience of independently performing flow cytometry assays (including design of new panels), as well as experience characterizing lymphocyte populations is a strong track record.
As work in experimental animal models is included in the duties, such experiences are considered meritorious.
The applicant should have a good ability to work clearly and in a structured manner and report the results obtained. Great importance is placed on the applicant's interest in the subject area and suitability for the project. Knowledge of Swedish is seen as meritorious.
More about the employment The employment is a temporary, full-time employment for two years according to the terms of the agreement on temporary employment as a postdoctoral researcher from 1 October 2022.
